What is the difference between strategic leadership and management decision-making?

Leadership and management strategic decision-making are concepts mainly used in reference to running the affairs of an organization or an institution. However, it is imperative to point out that; most people are unable to differentiate what actually the two concepts refer to when referring to the running of organizations or institutions. Whereas these two concepts are closely related in that they are widely used when referring to the running of organizations, there are key differences that exist between leadership and management strategic decision-making. This objective of this paper is therefore to outline key differences between leadership and management strategic decision-making and explanation as to whether one can exist without the other. The paper will further discuss the impact leadership strategic decision-making has on the lives of individuals, communities, markets, society, andculture.
Leadership entails providing guidance and direction on a daily basis to a group of individuals in an organization, institution, or even a community with an objective of achieving specific set goals. Selvarajah and Meyer (2017) define leadership as, “an integral concept within human resources capacity building to support the well-being of nations.” (pg. 264). According to McManus (2017), leadership can also be defined as the ability to influence and lead a diverse group of people with an objective of achieving common objectives and goals. It should be noted thatleadership involves setting a positive example for other individuals to emulate to enable them to achieve short-term goals of the organization.
Management strategic decision-making, on the other hand, involves setting strategic decisions which influence the future of an organization, institution or a community. In regard to strategic decision-making, managers of an organization/institution make strategic decisions that enable an organization to overcome both internal and external forces that can impede it from achieving its long-term goals. It is fundamentally important to state that, “Strategic decisions determine the direction of a company and its viability in the light of the known and unknown changes that occur in the environment.” (Montiel, Sole, Aguilar, & Magos, 2015, pg. 132). Based on this information, it can be asserted that management utilizes strategic decision-making to analyze an organization’s internal and external environment to determine potential impediments to the achievementof long-term goals and proceed to develop appropriate strategies to address the identified issues.
Every organization or institution has its specific goals and objectives which can either be short-term or long-term. To achieve these goals and objectives, the organization/institution relies on effective leadership and management strategic decision making. For example, through leadership, the leaders in an organization communicate the goals of the organization to its entire staff and provide a framework which can be used to achieve the goals. In regard to strategic decision making, the management of an organization carries an in-depth analysis of the organization and the industry itoperates in to determine critical factors that influence its operations. The management then formulates strategies that can be used to overcome internal and external challenges in order to achieve its anticipated goals and objectives. Based on this information, it can be concluded thatleadership and management strategic decision making cannot exist without each if an organization is committed to theachievementof its goals.
Leadership strategic decision-making has a significantimpact on the lives of individuals, communities, competition, markets, society, andculture. For instance, strategic decision-making enhances the productivity of individuals as well as enhanced service delivery to the community. In addition, strategic decision-making enables an organization to develop strategies of overcoming competition and achieving competitive advantage in the markets they operate in despite the existence of cultural diversity in the organization. Based on this information, it is indisputable that leadership decision-making has a considerable impact on the lives of individuals, communities, competition, markets, society, andculture.
In conclusion, there are differences between leadership and management decision-making. For instance, leadership entails guiding and directing individual in an organization/institution on a dailybasis while management strategic decision making involves developing strategies which can enable an organization to address aspects which can impede it from achievingof its goals. Another difference between these two concepts is that leadership focuses on achieving short-term goals while strategic decision-making focuses on the achievement of long-term goals.
