Terminating a family member can have more potential
for drama within the family so this must be handled very carefully. Of course,
as with any sensitive information, it is important to have the discussion with
the employee privately. Perhaps, most importantly, be very honest and upfront
with the employee so they have a complete understanding of the circumstances.
If it is possible, give them feedback ahead of time so they are not completely
surprised by the news. Because this is a family member, they may feel
comfortable enough to say things that other employees will not so allow them to
vent and process the news. It is important that the person terminating the
family member remain calm and cordial. Offer them support and encouragement for
their career (Tappero, n.d.).
